Rochester Area Foundation awards $9,000 to increase dental access for thousands of people in need.

ROCHESTER, MINN. – Community Dental Care (CDC) announced today it has received a $9,000 grant award from the Rochester Area Foundation to support the construction of a new 18-operatory dental clinic located at 2120 US Highway 14 East in Rochester. The grant award includes gifts from the Better Community Fund, the Jim & Judy Sloan Foundation, and the Dr. Martin & Mary Campion Donor Advised Fund.

The new clinic will transform dental care for underserved populations in southeastern Minnesota. The clinic will include 12 treatment and 6 hygiene operatories, x-ray, laboratory and sterilization rooms, a conference room and two dedicated rooms for preventive education.  It will be the headquarters for oral health services and community oral health programs throughout Southeast Minnesota.

Community Dental Care broke ground for the new clinic in September and will open next fall with 9 operatories. They will add operatories as funding permits opening all 18 operatories by December 2018. The new facility will provide comprehensive general dental services, and will offer community-based education programs. It will expand dental services for Southeastern Minnesota residents, providing 35,000 patient encounters to more than 10,000 unique patients annually, and will create 30-35 new, full-time professional jobs for local residents.

Last month, CDC announced they received a $1 Million grant award towards the project from Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation. They will begin local, individual fundraising in Rochester to support new equipment and start-up expenses in December 2016.

The RCTC Heintz Center Clinic, where the current 6-chair dental clinic resides, has over 5,500 future appointments through May 2017. Running two shifts daily—14 hours each day—the clinic has not been able to keep up with the demand. Patients currently wait at least two months for an appointment with a dentist and up to seven months for an oral hygiene appointment.

“We are so grateful to the Rochester Area Foundation and all they have done to support our organization and mission to increase dental access for all people in Olmsted and surrounding counties,” said Dr. Vacharee Peterson, CEO of Community Dental Care. “The need is just enormous and so many thousands of patients will benefit from this gift from the Foundation.”

The Rochester Area Foundation awards biannual grants through a competitive application and review process from the community endowment, the Better Communities Fund, with support from private funds held at the Rochester Area Foundation. Jane Angelone, grants officer at the Rochester Area Foundation explained, “The Grant Distribution Committee recognized that a key unmet need in the Rochester area is affordable dental care. Community Dental Care is providing high-quality dental care that serves as a gateway to good overall health for children and adults in our communities—especially those most in need.”

The mission of Community Dental Care is to ensure equal access to quality dental care and preventive education for all. They fulfill their mission through clinical services, preventive education programs, training of professionals and advocacy. Their vision is that all people will have access to high quality, affordable dental care in a convenient, caring, and respectful environment. Through support from the Rochester Area Foundation, Community Dental Care is able to build capacity, impact community, and make a difference in health outcomes for residents in Rochester and surrounding counties.
