RCTC TO HOST ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS EXPERT
(Rochester, MN) Rochester Community and Technical College is pleased to welcome Joshua Frieman, Ph.D. to campus on Monday, April 29 at 1:00 pm in RCTC’s Hill Theater. Dr. Frieman will present on topics including theoretical and observational cosmology, especially dark energy; large-scale structure; the early universe; and the interplay between cosmology, particle physics, and astrophysics.
Frieman’s current and recent research projects include the analyses of the SDSS-II Supernova and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys and the use of weak gravitational lensing observations to probe the distribution of mass on galaxy and cluster scales.
Frieman served as the Director of the Dark Energy Survey for eight years and is also Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was named president-elect of the Aspen Center for Physics in August 2018. The Fermilab Particle Physics Division includes the lab’s energy and cosmic frontier programs, muon experiments, theoretical physics, astrophysics, technical infrastructure, and expertise that supports these programs. Frieman earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact RCTC’s Student Life office at 507-285-7206.
